Per !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the Dubai International Motor Show's organizers posted up this pic on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and said that the FT 86 sedan's regional debut would be at the show (which starts on Tuesday).

autoblog doubts that this regional debut is real since the Toyobaru sedan would probably have been revealed at an earlier show if that were the case. For comparison's sake, here's the left side of the original FT 86 Concept coupe:

I hope they don't make one. I think it's a stupid idea... The car was designed, from the get-go to be a sports coupe... and it should be left that way. No sedan. No wagon. No shooting break. If they make any of those, it will no handle the same, because it's wheelbase will be longer, and the car will be heavier, which means they'd have to re-engineer the suspension geometry, etc. As the old saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Another old saying also comes to mind, "leave well enough alone".

It looks out of proportion.

I think it's just a mockup.

That looks a little too Kia Forte.

Toyota needs it's line re-invigorated. And the lengthening of the platform and re-structuring of the suspension will cut R&D significantly VS making a whole new car.

And besides, making a second car that's different doesn't threaten the original's life. In fact, it makes it more valuable due to increased adoption of shared parts and ideas. Wouldn't you rather have this kind of car over something like or related to the Camry?

Normally, I would't agree with a statement like this, but the FRS/BRZ/GT86 is a rare exception. Why mess with a perfect chassis?

For one... You're talking to a former Camry V6 owner. I have no issues with the Toyota Camry.

And two... Sure, they could take the platform, and make a different car with it, but I wholeheartedly disagree with making a sedan version of the FR-S/BRZ/GT 86. It waters down the image of the car. Would you have liked for Toyota to make a Toyota Supra Sedan? Or a Toyota Trueno Sedan? Or a Toyota 2000GT Sedan? The answer to those 3 questions should be a full bodied, resounding "No". The FR-S/BRZ/GT 86 is an heir to their Heritage. Even Toyota had said such after the car was released. And IMHO, to water it down by making a sedan, or a wagon, or a shooting break isn't right. It in essence waters down that heritage as well.

I couldn't disagree more. The world needs companies besides BMW making affordable RWD vehicles that come with manual transmissions. I love BMW but the maintence costs can be high.

Plenty of people live in California, Texas, and Florida and do not need FWD or AWD. For us RWD is superior but our choices are always limited to BMW if you want a manual and any amount of practicality.

Why should all practical cars be FWD? Sure you lose a little space with RWD but they are dynamically superior. I care about driving dynamics even in a car that can move more then two people..

And FWIW with snow tires and traction control - RWD is damn good in the snow nowadays.

It is ugly. I wouldn't mind a shooting brake version as the AE86 had a hatch back variant and it would be a faithful rendition for them to make a hatch version of the FRZ86. . . I don't see where a sedan could come in and make sense. Toyota is going to fuck up the best thing they have made in 20 years if they make a sedan out of it. . .

That's you, though. Making a one-off product just for that chassis is a sure-fire way to kill a company in the future.

They had a Supra sedan. It was called the first gen IS. Same platform, same engine. And yes, I love it. And so do a lot of other gearheads.

It would certainly make decision making harder. (please be rwd) FR-S Sedan vs. Civic Si vs. 320i vs. CPO 1 series.

*smh*

Sure, the Lexus IS and the Supra may share the same platform, but in no way does that mean that the Lexus IS is a Supra Sedan. They are styled differently than one another. They're completely separate models.

Note, I did not say they couldn't use the platform (i.e. the base structural architecture of the FR-S/BRZ/GT 86) to build another car, in fact, I specifically said they could, but that doesn't mean it has to be a Sedan version of said car. And I quote:

Sure, they could take the platform, and make a different car with it, but I wholeheartedly disagree with making a sedan version of the FR-S/BRZ/GT 86.

I am not saying that they should only use that platform for that car. No where have I said anything remotely close to that. I am simply against the idea of them making a Sedan, Wagon, etc. version of the FR-S/BRZ/GT 86 because it detracts from that car. Toyota didn't try to pretend a Lexus IS was a Toyota Supra, because while they may share the same platform, they're two different cars altogether. Shared componants =/= same car model.
